A24 Alliance welcomes scrapping of A24 Ashington-Southwater road scheme

The A24 Alliance welcomes West Sussex County Council's decision to cancel and withdraw its plans to change the A24 into a 'super highway'. For many years the A24 Alliance has argued that small-scale low cost roadwork's are all that is needed to make this road safer - at last, the County Council has agreed with the A24 Alliance.

Speaking on behalf of the A24 Alliance, Peter Finch said:

"This is very welcome news. For many years we have said this scheme should be scrapped. It was a hugely expensive white elephant of a scheme and such a pity that it has taken the Council so long to come to what we have said was the only sensible decision. With so many of the county's roads needing major repair works after decades of neglect, surely the sensible thing for the council to do is invest the money saved by doing a thorough overhaul of existing roads".
