A24 Alliance

Press Release

For Immediate Release                   20 November 2006

10 Year Wait for White Elephant!

The County Council says wait ten years and get a safer A24. However the A24 Alliance says the taxpayer doesn't have to wait that long to get a safer A24 if the Council follows their proposals, and it will be cheaper too.

.

Following the announcement that the Regional Assembly is asking Government to fund West Sussex County Council's discredited Ashington and Southwater road scheme, the A24 Alliance is to hold an Open Meeting at Partridge Green Methodist Hall, High Street, Partridge Green at 7.30pm on Wednesday 27th November to explain the County Council's ideas and the A24 Alliance's alternatives.

Peter Finch for the A24 Alliance said: "The A24 Alliance was amazed to find that the Regional Assembly had agreed to support the scheme and felt we needed to call an emergency meeting.  That meeting will let local taxpayers know that the Council's ideas will mean they will have to wait for more than ten year's before safety issues are looked at - and then end up with an unnecessary super highway, costing millions which could be better spent elsewhere. And if that wasn't bad enough we also have to let people know some properties are now blighted.

Instead of the County's speedway plan which we believe will even create more severe accidents and add to global warming, the A24 Alliance's answer is to install a couple of roundabouts and safety barriers that can be funded in months not years and be in keeping with the rural character and local environment of the area. Everyone is invited to the meeting at Partridge Green Methodist Hall to hear more details and join the campaign to fight for a safe road in keeping with our environment NOW."

ENDS.

Editors’ notes.

The A24 Alliance was formed in January 2003 by a number of residents who live in the various villages and individual locations along the A24 from Dorking to Worthing.
