A24 Alliance welcomes scrapping of A24 Horsham-Capel road scheme

The A24 Alliance welcomes West Sussex County Council's decision to cancel and withdraw its plans to change the road into part of the A24 'super highway'. For many years, the A24 Alliance has argued that small-scale low cost roadwork's are all that is needed to make this road safe. Finally, the County Council has agreed with the A24 Alliance's stance. In its recent decision the Council says: "Since the improvement scheme was approved, accident remedial measures have helped to reduce the incidence of personal injury accidents and ... alternative, low-cost safety improvements now represent an acceptable and deliverable alternative to the scheme." The A24 Alliance now expects the Council will announce a similar decision for the A24 between Ashington and Southwater since the small-scale works already undertaken have improved the safety of the road.

Speaking on behalf of the A24 Alliance, Peter Finch said:

"This is very welcome news. We have campaigned for many years that this scheme should be scrapped. It was a hugely expensive white elephant of a scheme and such a pity that it has taken the Council so long to come to what we have said was the only sensible decision. The Council must now announce that it will scrap the A24 Ashington-Southwater scheme as well and stop spending any more local council taxpayers money on this unnecessary scheme".
