A24
Alliance
For Immediate Release 31March 2005
The announcement made by the
West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport (County
Council Report 18 March 2005) stating that the various A24 road building schemes
are unlikely to start before 2009, and only then if they get Government high
priority for funding, has left property and land blighted and unable to be sold.
For the 24 Alliance Peter Finch said: “Anyone who wanted to sell-up and move
on would be in an impossible situation. The health of an elderly person faced
with their property and land blighted is likely to be seriously affected. They
might even think they will be dead before the muddle is sorted out”.
Continuing Peter Finch said: “With the County elections soon, this West Sussex
County Council Folly will clearly be a major election issue. The likes of Swampy
may have departed from the headlines but the middle England voter at election
time is a more potent weapon to be feared.
As Government funding is unlikely and the safety schemes implemented to date a
success, The A24 Alliance is calling on WSCC to abandon their plan for the road
and allow people to resume their lives”.

Notes for Editors.
The AA Foundation for Road Safety Research has announced in their latest survey
of crashes in the South East region, that there has been a noticeable reduction
in crashes on the A24. As a result the AA have now reduced the risk rating of
the road to ‘Low – Medium’, putting it now in the category of one of the
safest roads in the South East. (See: www.aatrust.com)
The A24 Alliance was formed in January 2003 by a number of residents who live in
the various villages and individual locations along the A24 from Dorking to
