Press Release

For Immediate Release                    9 February 2004

Brilliant Camera Success.

Members of the A24 Alliance at their first meeting of the New Year have congratulated West Sussex County Council on their bold move by installing a speed camera on the A24 at Dial Post.

Said Peter Finch of the A24 Alliance: "Despite opposition from a minority of irresponsible drivers who want to use the A24 as a race track, West Sussex County Councils bold move to install the speed camera at Dial Post has been a brilliant success.

With the slower speeds, traffic at busy times is flowing smother and calmer, noise in Dial Post is lower and residents there can gain access on to the road easer. But above all the road is much safer.

So why are the council stubbornly ploughing on with their plan to turn the road into a superhighway with the massive spaghetti junctions and damage to the countryside etc?"

Peter Finch added: "Of course we agree with West Sussex County Council's policy of making the road safer. Where we disagree is the way they are happy to squander vast millions of taxpayer's money on such a grandiose scheme when a camera installed for a fraction of the cost has done the job.

What we say to the council is: Ditch your superhighway scheme, instead install a further camera on the southbound carriageway at Dial Post together with getting the Knepp Castle one up and running. Finally use the money saved by reducing council tax and improving care for the elderly.

ENDS.
